چکیده

ATM networks being a connection-oriented technology are providing service for real-time communication. Before two hosts can communicate, a connection has to be established between them. After a connection is established, messages are divided into fixed size packets called cells and are being sent from a source host to a destination host. Real-time communication service requires the underlying network to provide performance guarantees for the on-time delivery of cells. There are two types of performance guarantees: deterministic and statistical guarantees. While a deterministic guarantee provides an absolute bound on the worst case cell delay, a statistical guarantee provides a probabilistic bound on the worst case cell delay. This statistical guarantee is more suitable than the

Performance Analysis of ATM Switches with Self-Similar Input Traffic

In this paper, the performance of ATM switches with self-similar input traffic is analyzed. The ATM switch is a non-blocking, output-buffered switch, and input traffic is approximated by a Poisson-Zeta process, which is an asymptotically second-order self-similar process. The upper and lower bounds of the buffer overflow probability of the switch are obtained by stochastically bounding the numb...

Performance of an ATM LAN switch with back-pressure function

Traffic control schemes for ATM networks can be classified into two categories: reactive congestion control and preventive congestion control. Reactive congestion controlcan be effective in ATM local area networks as well as preventive congestion control. A possible scheme to realize efficient reactive congestion control is a switch architecture, which possesses buffers on both sides of input a...

Variable Length Packet Switches: Delay Analysis of Crossbar Switches under Poisson and Self Similar Traffic

We consider crossbar switches for switching variable length packets. Analysis of such switches is important in the context of IP switches where the packet interarrival times and packet lengths are drawn from continuous distributions. Assuming a single stage M N switch we obtain a very general throughput delay model for Poisson packet arrivals and exponential service times. We then analyze an M ...

Design, Analysis of an ATM Switch With Priority Discarding Scheme

In this paper, we propose an N × N high speed and non-blocking asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch with input and output buffers. In this switch, each buffer adopts a priority discarding scheme, which discards incoming cells of low-priority traffic when its queue length is greater than a predefined threshold value. Our switch also supports broadcast/multicast functions without increasing th...

A Parallel-Tree Switch Architecture for ATM Networks

We present a novel ATM switch called parallel-tree Banyan switch fabric (PTBSF) that consists of parallel Banyans arranged in a tree topology. Packets enter at the topmost Banyan. Internal conflicts are eliminated by using a conflict free 34 switching element which distributes conflicting cells over different Banyans. Thus, cell loss may occur only at the lowest Banyan. Increasing the number of...
